Uploading with Microsoft® FrontPage® 98
The instructions on this page refer to the latest version, Microsoft
FrontPage 98, and may differ slightly from the
method users of FrontPage 97 would use. To begin you will need your domain
name or IP address, your User Name, and your password. Also, it is recommended
that you use FrontPage to create a local copy of the web site on your hard
drive first, then upload the web to the server. ValueWeb does not recommend
real-time editing of the
web site directly on the server without first saving a local backup copy.
Creating a new FrontPage web:
To create a new FrontPage web, follow the following steps:
- Start the FrontPage Explorer on your system. You should see the 'Getting
Started' dialogue.
If you don't see the 'Getting Started' dialogue, then go to the 'File' menu and
select 'New' and 'FrontPage Web'.
- Select 'Create New FrontPage Web'.
- When the 'New FrontPage Web' dialogue appears, you will see two sections
numbered '1' and '2'. In section 1, choose what type of web you want to begin
work on,
or pick a specific web site template. Under number 2, you will see a requester
asking for the name of the new web. You should leave this blank if you
want this web to be the default (or first) web for your ValueWeb
account.
- You can also change the location that the web site will be saved on your
hard drive here by selecting
'Browse' under the path name. Be sure you make note of the location of the new
web on your hard drive, so you can publish it to the server later.
- You are now ready to create the web using whatever techniques you wish to
produce the finished web site. Your FrontPage documentation should have many
helpful hints to assist you in the creation of your site.
Publishing your web site to the server:
Now you should be ready to publish the new web site to the server using the
following steps:
- Connect to your Internet Service Provider.
- If you are not already looking at the local copy of your web site using
FrontPage Explorer, then start FrontPage and
select 'Open and Existing FrontPage Web' from the 'Getting Started' dialogue.
(If you do not see the 'Getting Started' dialogue, select 'File', and 'Open
FrontPage Web'.)
- From here, you should see a list of available, recently-opened FrontPage
webs. Select the one you wish to upload and click 'OK'. Alternately, you can
select 'More Webs',
type in the location of the web on your hard drive, such as 'c:\myweb' or
similar, and click on 'List Webs' to find your 'Root Web'.
- Go to the file menu and select 'Publish'. You will see one of two possible
requesters open, asking for the name of the web server. If you see your IP
address or domain on the existing list (ie. you have uploaded previously to
your site),
then just choose it and click 'OK'. If not, you will need to select 'More
Webs', and type in your domain name or IP address. You will also see an option
to 'Publish Changed Pages Only', which you may want to deselect if this is the
first time you have published to the server. Your web site should then be
published to the server automatically. Make sure
the default home page is named 'index.html', so that the site will be visible
when you visit it with your web browser.
