SSL Secure Server Information

All ValueWeb Customers on our Unix Systems have access to an SSL Secure Server. Once you become a customer with ValueWeb, you may go to your Account Information page on the Control Panel (www.yourdomain.com/stats) and "checkmark" the SSL or secure server. Your site will now have a secure socket.

Any page that you refer to using

https://www.domain.com/page.html
(notice the 's' after the usual 'http')

will come up securely. It is strongly advised that you use this only for pages that utilize order forms, since these pages always load more slowly than non-secure pages. While this page will be secure, a window may come up with warnings by Netscape and Internet Explorer browsers indicating that the 'Certificate does not match the domain name'. This is because you are, by default, using ValueWeb's security certificate, which, of course, does not match your domain name. Virtually all web browsers are configured to alert the user when this occurs. To remove these warnings, your own certificate may be purchased from the Verisign Corporation. Their charge is $349.00 with $249.00 annual renewals. ValueWeb will charge $25.00 to create a key and start the process.

Note that the site will be secure regardless of the certificate used, but the web browsers are configured to warn the user anyway. There are a few steps to obtaining your own cerificate, if desired. The first step is to contact us so we may get information from you regarding your account. At that point, we will create a CSR (key) and E-mail it to you. Here is the required information that Verisign will need.

Company Name:
Company Administrator and Title:
Company Address:
Company Phone:
Company Fax (if any):
Email Address:
Domain name:

If you contact our sales office with this information, we can proceed with the process right away. Please call us at 800-934-6788, or E-mail the require information to our Sales office. In approximately 3 days, ValueWeb will E-mail you with your CSR (key). Once you have the CSR, please proceed to

Verisign's CSR Area.

Verisign will ask you for the type of web server we are running, which is

Apache Stronghold

Verisign will then generate a certificate for you which should then be E-mailed back to our Webmaster for installation on our server.

For more assistance, please call Sales at 800-934-6788 between the hours of 9 AM and 10 PM Eastern, or E-Mail the Sales office.
